Response To Todd Gitlin

September 6, 2007 at 7:58 pm (Uncategorized)

for homework we had to read this packet written by Todd Gitlin. hes very opinionated and feels that we actually dont get information from our media. he said “The centrality of media is disguised, in part, by the prevalence of that assured, hard edgeed phrase information society, or even more grandly, information age.” i agree with that and disagree.

i agree with that because media really does do alot of information on things we really dont need at all. like paris hiltons new outfit or brad and ange having another fight. they need to focus on important things like political events or even major world events rather then som of the stupid things they do show.

now i no i said i agree with his statement but i also have strong opposition to it because when major things do happen the news does seem to follow it somewhat. when 9/11 happened im pretty sure not one news station was talking about anything else. that even lasted for weeks and weeks.

now 9/11 was major so they needed to cover it but what about times when other events happpen and all you can find are little blips of  information on it. that is why, even though i disagree sometimes with big Todd Gitlin’s general outline of media coverage, i agree with Todd Gitlin’s theory that the media doesnt always cover what needs to be covered and that sometimes they focus to much on a paparazzi aspect of the news and dont focus on the truly important things.

i completely agree with your contradicted opinion. it makes a lot of sense and to me its so true. media can be totally pointless and give unnecessary information yet it can be completely informative and effect peoples lives. Nice job on the blog!! =]

I defiantly agree with both sides of what you are saying. The news focuses a lot on celebrity “nonsense” ex. Britney Spears. For awhile the top news stories were about the new iPhone. There are defiantly more important events than the news about the new technology.

I think that the news does do a good job when major events happen, hurricane Katrina, VA Tech shootings, 9/11, all got a good amount of coverage from the news. However sometimes there are events that get overlooked and seem to be unimportant compared to celebrity news. Local events seem to be overlooked sometimes, and I also think that the news focuses on the negative aspects of society rather than the good. We are constantly being told about robberies and murders when clearly there is good going on in the world as well.

your point is just like todd was saying the news is jumping out at us. but then again that is only the top stories. it will say one big sentence all bold and everything, but if you click on it most of the time it will have pretty useful information. and the internet has everything it seems.
